Born in Torrington, Wyoming, Stephanie A. Burns developed an early fascination with science and mathematics, leading her to pursue chemistry. She earned a bachelor's degree from Florida International University in Miami in 1977, where she was introduced to organosilicon chemistry.
She continued her graduate work at Iowa State University, receiving her Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1982.
