Spike Lee (born Shelton Jackson Lee) is an American filmmaker and actor known for his distinctive body of work that consistently explores race relations, issues within the black community, the role of media, urban crime, poverty, and other political issues. He studied filmmaking at Morehouse College and New York University Tisch School of the Arts, where his student film Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1983) earned a Student Academy Award.
