Ruth Barcan Marcus (1921–2012) was an American academic philosopher and logician, best known for her foundational contributions to modal and philosophical logic. She developed the first formal systems of quantified modal logic and introduced the widely discussed Barcan formula, as well as the now standard "box" operator for necessity.
