General Sir Richard Shirreff was born in Kenya in 1955 and educated in England. He graduated from Exeter College, Oxford, with a degree in Modern History before being commissioned into the British Army from Sandhurst in 1976. He was promoted to captain in 1980 and major in 1987, beginning a distinguished 37-year military career.
Throughout his service, Shirreff commanded soldiers on operations at every level from platoon to division.
