Tory Awatere Whanau is a New Zealand politician who made history as the first person of Māori descent to be elected Mayor of Wellington in 2022. She served in this role until 2025 and previously spent five years as the parliamentary chief of staff for the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand. Whanau is of Pakakohi and Ngāruahine descent.
Born in Porirua in 1983, Whanau grew up in Cannons Creek and Patea before moving to Wellington to study.
