Michael David Rann, born on January 5, 1953, in Sidcup, Kent, England, spent his early childhood in South London before his family emigrated to New Zealand in 1962. He completed a Bachelor and Master of Arts in political science at the University of Auckland, where he was also Vice President of the New Zealand Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and editor of the student newspaper Craccum.
