Lisa Murkowski is the senior United States Senator from Alaska, a position she has held since 2002. She is the first woman to represent Alaska in the U.S.
Congress and is the Senate's second-most senior Republican woman. Murkowski was initially appointed to the Senate by her father, Frank Murkowski, who resigned the seat to become Alaska's governor. She subsequently won a full term in 2004, and after losing the 2010 Republican primary, successfully ran as a write-in candidate.
