Kotaro Umeda, born in Tokyo, Japan, moved to the United States at age six. He played NCAA Division I soccer at the University of Louisville before embarking on a six-year professional football career. Umeda competed in the Campeonato de Brazil with Joinville Esporte Clube, becoming the first-ever Asian athlete to represent the club.
