Biography

Joost VandeVondele serves as the Deputy Director for Science and Head of Research Infrastructure Engineering at CSCS. He is a scientist, technologist, and leader with a background in natural sciences and a strong focus on software and AI. His work includes leading the development of major scientific simulation codes and driving the training of the fully open Apertus LLM.

VandeVondele also spearheads the creation of the world's strongest AI program for chess in his free time.
