Jolanda Felicia Jones, born November 6, 1965, grew up in Houston's Third Ward as the oldest of five children. Despite a childhood marked by poverty and personal tragedy, her mother emphasized academic success. Jones excelled as an All-American basketball player and track and field athlete at Elsik High School, earning an athletic scholarship to the University of Houston.
