James M. Poterba is an American economist who serves as the Mitsui Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also the current President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
Poterba began his academic career as an instructor in economics at MIT, becoming a Professor of Economics in 1988 before being appointed the Mitsui Professor of Economics.
