Isabel Rosales was born in Holguin, Cuba, where she spent her first six years. Her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1998. She quickly developed a strong grasp of English, an accomplishment that was featured in a local community paper.
Rosales gravitated toward a career in journalism in middle school, driven by her respect for freedom of speech and the press, which she noted was strictly forbidden in her homeland.
