Ingrid Elizabeth Newkirk was born in Kingston upon Thames, England, in 1949. She spent her early years in Scotland and Hertfordshire before moving to New Delhi, India, at age seven, where her father worked for the government and her mother volunteered for Mother Teresa. Newkirk attended a convent boarding school in the Himalayas.
