George Porter, Baron Porter of Luddenham (1920-2002), was a distinguished British chemist who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967, shared with Manfred Eigen and Ronald George Wreyford Norrish. He was born in Stainforth, Yorkshire, and pursued his education at Thorne Grammar School, the University of Leeds, and the University of Cambridge, where he earned his PhD in 1949 for research into free radicals produced by photochemical means.
