Geoffrey George Gouriet, a British inventor, joined the Drive Section of the Transmitters Department of the BBC in 1937. In 1937/38, he invented a high stability crystal-controlled variant of the Colpitts oscillator. This circuit was immediately utilized by the BBC to drive its Medium Wave broadcast transmitters, enabling Britain's wartime single-frequency synchronised radio services to prevent the Luftwaffe from using BBC transmitters for navigation.
