Emily Austin was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Israeli parents, and grew up on Long Island. She attended Hofstra University, where she studied journalism. Austin's parents are Modern Orthodox Jews, and she follows Jewish religious traditions, including keeping kosher and Shabbat. She has cited a Holocaust education trip to Poland at age 16 as a turning point in her life.
