Carl Edward Sagan (1934–1996) was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, and science communicator. He began his academic career as an assistant professor at Harvard before spending most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan was a prolific author, publishing over 600 scientific papers and articles and authoring, co-authoring, or editing more than 20 books.
