Alan Mathison Turing was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, and theoretical biologist. He is widely considered the father of theoretical computer science, having provided a formalization of the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which serves as a model of a general-purpose computer.
Born in London, Turing graduated from King's College, Cambridge, and earned a doctorate degree from Princeton University in 1938.
